Backing Jack - Duchenne Dash 2020

We're #backingjack and his dad Richard Binns, our Regional Planning Manager who is preparing for his epic fundraising cycling challenge from London to Paris in just 24 hours in June this year. All proceeds will go towards Duchenne UK to help children including his son Jack with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

When Richard Binns our Regional Planner received the news last year that his son Jack has been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), his world was instantly turned upside down.

For those not familiar with the diagnosis, it’s a very rare terminal muscle wasting disease which currently has no cure with an estimated 300,000 sufferers worldwide.

The history of this disease, which mainly effects boys would see Jack being paralysed and needing a wheelchair from the age of 12 and a life expectancy between 20 and 30 due to cardiac complications that come on as he gets older.

There is hope however thanks to recent medical advances. Right now, there are over 70 clinical trials ongoing and more planned for the future to help Duchenne sufferers. The hope is that these clinical trials will yield results that can alter the history of this disease and change the outlook for children like Jack suffering with this condition.

To help fund these trials, Richard along with his 3 friends have signed up to do the Duchenne Dash.

The Duchenne Dash is a gruelling 24-hour bike ride from London to Paris to help children with DMD. They start in London on the 12th June and arrive triumphant a day later, under the Eiffel Tower, which also just happens to be Richard’s birthday.

A family fund has been set up in Jacks name #BackingJack and all proceeds through this fund go directly to Duchenne UK.
