Sir Robert McAlpine maintains solid performance amidst volatile markets

Paul Hamer, CEO, Sir Robert McAlpineWe are pleased to announce solid financial results for the year 2021-22, showcasing resilience in turbulent and volatile markets:

  • Operating profit was £9.6m in 2022 compared to a profit of £9.6m in 2021.
  • The annual turnover was £1,086.9m in 2022 compared to £937.2m in 2021.
  • Cash remained strong at £99.5m at year end with no debt.

Despite the ongoing challenges of the trading environment caused by material shortages, inflationary pressures, and further exacerbated by the Ukraine conflict, we have maintained a solid performance and a robust cash position.

As a Tier 1 contractor, we have kept a prudent approach guided by our values, applying strategic focus on nurturing strong relationships with our clients, industry peers and supply chain partners externally, getting closer to communities to create social value, tackling climate change and promoting an inclusive culture for our people.

This, combined with Build Sure, our systematic approach to delivering excellence that underpins each of our projects, has enabled the business to deliver in an ever complex and difficult geopolitical context. Amongst our top achievements last year, we successfully completed the restoration of the Elizabeth Tower, one of the most iconic landmarks in the country.

We have once again had to face unprecedented challenges as an industry. As a family led business with more than 150 years of history, the strong relationships that we nurture with our clients, supply chain partners, consultants, communities and industry peers, as well as our uncompromising approach to delivering excellence has allowed us to maintain our performance.

Evolving SRM for future success

We want to be renowned for our work with clients and communities as we construct a better world for future generations.

Paul Hamer Chief Executive

In May this year, in response to the challenging environment affecting the industry, we developed and implemented a new strategy, Evolving SRM, resting on three pillars, “Focus, Adapt, Evolve”. The strategy aims to drive profitable growth, reduce risks, and capitalise on opportunities. This saw the company transition from a regional operating model to a national, sector-focused model, with centres of excellence providing projects with swift access to expertise, evolving SRM for future generations.

We are prioritising sectors where we have been most successful; these include Infrastructure, Healthcare, Commercial Offices, Industrial, as well as the heritage and complex schemes delivered by our Major & Special Projects team. The move is expected to set the business up for sustained success, as the built environment evolves rapidly, create more value for our clients and offer more rewarding career paths to our people.

We remain guided by our values and operate in an unquestionably ethical and responsible  manner, for the benefit of our people, communities, and the planet.

Sustainability strategy

We develop lasting sustainability programmes, tools, and expertise that respond to the ever-evolving needs of our clients and our sector.

As we embed sustainability ever deeper into our business, we are improving how we operate:

  • Reducing our carbon emissions.
  • Transitioning to a more circular model of resource use.
  • Embedding ethical procurement into our working practices.
  • Delivering powerful social value.

Our sustainability strategy gives us the freedom to consistently deliver solutions that provide lasting benefit to our clients, our local communities and the environments in which we work.

We also recently achieved a significant milestone as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) verified our Carbon Reduction Pathway and strategy aligned to limit global warming to 1.5oc above industrial levels.

    Maggie's Cancer Care Centres

We’ve been working with Maggie’s for more than a decade, supporting the vital work they do to help those impacted by cancer. Our people have taken Maggie’s to their hearts and Spring 2022 saw us mark a milestone six years in the making as we reached our £1m fundraising target for the charity.

  2. Construction Youth Trust

Our relationship with the Construction Youth Trust (CYT) goes back to the 1960s. We were involved in founding the charity back then and have worked with the CYT ever since to inspire and enable young people to overcome barriers and follow a career in the construction and built environment sector.
