Congratulations to the team at Monkwearmouth Hospital in Sunderland, who have achieved practical completion on the construction of this £14.9m redevelopment project.
Monkwearmouth Development Ltd (MDL), a Joint Venture between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures Limited (SRMCV) and Argon Property Development Solutions (APDS), in partnership with NTW Solutions, a subsidiary of Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, has spearheaded the creation of a cutting-edge healthcare facility.
The project involved the demolition of two outdated structures to pave the way for a modern three-story hospital hub, featuring offices, flexible workspaces, a vibrant café named 'Café Bede,' and inviting breakout areas.
At the heart of the new development lies an impressive atrium, housing a welcoming reception area and the aforementioned Café Bede, envisioned as a community hotspot. The facility will serve as a hub for Community Mental Health teams and various other services, fostering collaboration and enhancing patient care.
In collaboration with staff, the design prioritised spacious and purpose-built environments, fostering teamwork and ensuring the delivery of exceptional care. The project has also expanded outdoor spaces, including a serene green area and seating zones, offering tranquillity amidst the bustling surroundings.
Despite the challenges posed by working within a constrained site adjacent to an operational hospital and residential areas, the project remained on track. Managing simultaneous demolition and construction activities demanded meticulous planning and execution. Also, integrating the new structure with existing hospital buildings posed additional complexities.

There are always challenges when working on a project of this nature, but, as always, you pulled together and we managed to overcome any hurdles to create a space that we can be really proud of.
