Karla is one of many members of our team who’ve achieved over ten years’ service at Sir Robert McAlpine. Unusually for a Quantity Surveyor, she initially graduated and worked in Human Resources. We spoke to her about her switch and her career here.
How did you come to construction and Sir Robert McAlpine?
In 2006 I decided on a career change. By luck I found myself in a temporary position within the Colchester Garrison PFI project. From that day, I knew this was the industry for me.
Why you decide to make the move permanent?
I could see Sir Robert McAlpine would provide me with the platform to succeed within my new career. There was clearly a strong family orientated culture, and the projects are interesting, diverse, and prestigious and will leave a lasting imprint.
How did Sir Robert McAlpine support your career change?
They nurtured me academically by sponsoring me at University to complete a Graduate Diploma in Quantity Surveyor, and also provided on the job training through a variety of projects, including the Bloomberg building.
What makes Sir Robert McAlpine different to other employers?
The difference is they believe in you and will spend time in nurturing your career and will go the extra mile to ensure you meet your ambitions.
Who has inspired you within the business?
Anna Baker, Nicky Rance and Alison Cox. All for their sheer determination, ambition, loyalty, commitment and hard work in building and delivering prestigious projects and implementing lasting strategies for SRM now and in the future.
They are also incredibly inspiring individuals as they are all women in construction and prove that regardless of your family commitments you can still be successful in your chosen career with the right work life balance.
Which three words sum up SRM to you?
Prestigious, dynamic, family.
How would you describe working at Sir Robert McAlpine?
A career with Sir Robert McAlpine is not just a job, it’s entering into one big family. You’re working towards achieving the company’s objectives together by growing, nurturing and sustaining relationships, talent and knowledge. Great people and delighted customers define the McAlpine Way.
