Supporting the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary

The iconic theatre on London's South Bank was completed by us in 1976 and a free public installation is opening in October 2026 to commemorate its 50th anniversary

We are proud to be supporting the National Theatre as it celebrates 50 years of its iconic South Bank home, marking a significant milestone in the history of one of the UK's most recognisable cultural landmarks.

Built between 1969 and 1976, the National Theatre - pictured, right, during construction in October 1971 - stands as one of the defining achievements of post-war British architecture. Designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, the Grade II listed building has become a landmark on London's South Bank and a symbol of creativity, innovation and cultural excellence.

We played a key role in its construction five decades ago, helping to deliver a building that continues to serve audiences, artists and communities from across the UK and around the world.

To commemorate the anniversary, the National Theatre will launch Stories Start Here: 50 Stories for 50 Years, a free public installation opening in October 2026. Located on the Queen's Walk and inspired by the Olivier Theatre's iconic amphitheatre seating, the installation will invite visitors to explore personal stories and reflections from actors, writers, directors, creatives connected to the National Theatre, and individuals involved in the construction of the NT. The installation will offer fresh insight into the building’s history while shining a light on the hidden corners, quirks, long-standing traditions, and personal rituals that make the National Theatre one of the greatest civic buildings of modern Britain.

As a business with more than 157 years of experience delivering some of the UK's most significant and complex buildings and infrastructure, we understand the importance of creating places that stand the test of time. The National Theatre is a lasting example of how engineering excellence, craftsmanship and collaboration can create a building that continues to inspire generations.

Fifty years after helping to construct this remarkable venue, we are delighted to support the National Theatre's anniversary celebrations and help showcase the stories, people and skills that have shaped one of Britain's most important cultural institutions.
