Springfield Village cut the ribbon at NHS summer street party

Master Developer STEP, a joint venture between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures and Kajima Partnerships, were a proud sponsor of the NHS summer street party at Springfield Village.

Springfield Village was declared officially open at a street party hosted by South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust on Wednesday 5 July.

STEP, a joint venture between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures and Kajima Partnerships, along with hundreds of staff, patients, service users and members of the local community came together to celebrate at the annual street party event, which was made even more special this year by coinciding with the launch of Springfield Village and the NHS’s 75th birthday.

Wandsworth Mayor, Juliana Annan, and Trust Chief Executive, Vanessa Ford, cut the ribbon to Springfield Village, a new mixed-use community in Tooting made up of state-of-the-art mental health facilities, over 800 new homes, shops, a public square and a 32-acre park – the biggest developed in London since the 2012 Olympics. Built by STEP’s main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, the village has been designed in collaboration with the Trust’s staff, patients and local people over a number of years to break down barriers, reduce the stigma around mental illness and open up the Springfield site for the benefit of the community.

At the centre of the village is Chapel Square and Springfield Hospital’s two brand new mental health facilities, the Trinity and Shaftesbury buildings which together represent a £150m investment. The cutting-edge buildings are home to a range of outpatient services and eight inpatient mental health wards featuring spacious ensuite bedrooms, world-class artworks and garden courtyards, providing outstanding environments for patients to receive care and recover.

While the Springfield Village development will take until approximately 2026 to fully complete, the Trust’s summer street party on 5 July marked the village officially opening to the public. The biggest part of the park, which includes ponds, playgrounds and areas for informal sport, is now open for local people to enjoy this summer, and residents have started moving into the hundreds of new homes already complete. Shops, cafés, a restaurant and gym will follow over the next two years.

The Springfield Village development is led by Master Developer STEP (The Springfield and Tolworth Estates Partnership – a JV between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures and Kajima Partnerships) in collaboration with the Trust and partners including Sir Robert McAlpine construction, Barratt London, London Square and City & Country.

STEP and housebuilding partners Barratt London, City & Country and London Square are delighted to sponsor the Trust’s Street Party marking the opening of Springfield Village. The progress of this pioneering project is a testament to real partnership working amongst all the parties involved, with every organisation showing total belief in the vision of a cohesive health and residential community and an unswerving determination to deliver. As staff and service users settle into their new facilities; residents move into their new homes and Springfield Park opens to the whole community, we can all feel extremely proud to celebrate the growing Springfield Village and its positive impact on the lives of the people who live, work and are treated here.

Councillor Juliana Annan, the Mayor of Wandsworth, said: "Opening Springfield Village is a huge moment for the local community and a testament to the hard work and progress made by the Trust and its partners over a number of years to make the site a fantastic community space for all. It was an honour to take part in the celebrations, which gave a brilliant insight into what is to come as the Trust continues with its ambitious programme of works to transform its estates and mental health services across south west London.”

Springfield Village summer street party

this is the opening of our the official
opening of our new mental health
facilities here at uh Springfield and
really importantly they're part of a new
community a new Springfield Village
where we have this Public Square we have
shops we have lots of housing trying to
break down the stigma and we're trying
to change that and we're trying to
create world-class mental health
facilities at the heart of a new Village
[Applause]
walking in today and just seeing
everybody come together in the street in
our communities and seeing mental health
at the heart of that is everything that
we've worked towards so it's a great day
and I hope everyone has a absolutely
fabulous time the whole aspiration of
Springfield is opening up the public so
being able to have these facilities and
everyone coming and enjoying and
actually coming up to the face of the
buildings interfacing with mental health
in society I think is wonderful we are
so excited this new building new
facilities it has really opened us out
to the community it's destigmatizing
mental health it's really really
important for us just seeing the staff
across all of the services really be
inspired by their new environment and
thinking all the time about how they can
build on it to like make preservation
care it's been great to see we've run
over 100 workshops and those workshops
are fed into conversations and sometimes
that's what artworks themselves that
have gone into these final pieces I
think my proudest moment was actually
completing one of the first
artworks in the hospital in Trinity
which was Alvin kofi's that was one of
the first was the hardest artwork to
complete and we were right in the
trenches in the summer 2022 and when he
finished it was just so gorgeous and I
know it meant a lot to the residents of
210.
[Music]
I'm just really proud of the
collaboration of all of the different
parties who've worked together for a
long time to build bring the whole
Vision to fruition new residents service
users staff moving into their new
facilities I think it's something we can
really all be proud of so amazing to see
this come from a platform into the built
development seeing the community here
and how this has all come together is
absolutely fantastic it's brilliant for
us for City and country that we're part
of a bigger plan it's it's really
exciting to be part of a village feel
that we're not selling property but
we're inviting people to start a new
life within a community the park itself
is a beautiful green opening night
Source space it's very tranquil amazing
amount of activity areas as well they've
got a climbing wall and it's just a
beautiful space for everyone in the
family to really enjoy it's about
offering bring access to a full and wide
ranging set of amenities for a community
it's it's amazing as you can see you've
got service users mixing with with staff
that work on the wards this is what the
whole thing about Springfield Village
was was to bring everyone together and
it's done that as you can see this is a
perfect opportunity for people to come
in and see that this is just people
living their everyday lives they have
difficult times as we all do and it's
about supporting people when they're not
well I've been in the trust for 35 years
so I've seen a lot of changes but now
it's absolutely beautiful oh we've loved
it so far as we moved in in November and
yeah we have really nice new neighbours
we love this little square in front of
us like this nice Community part of the
place where we live so we're looking
forward to see the shops as part of the
neighbourhood it's been a long journey
but getting to the end and now being
able to put our feet up and hand over to
the clinicians and what they're going to
be doing for the future and mental in
the UK it's been fantastic to join
together and celebrate our National
Institution which is the NHS and our own
village which is ground-breaking and
Paving a new way for mental health
