Tolworth’s Tala Building progress delights stakeholders
Local politicians were among those who joined tours of the new mental health facilities set to open in 2028
Sir Ed Davey was among a delegation of visitors to shower praise on our Tolworth Hospital team during a recent string of stakeholder tours.
The leader of the Liberal Democrats - who’s also the local MP – joined local councillors (pictured right) for an update on the progression of the Tala Building 15 months since main construction works began.
The guests were given an overview of the project and a site tour, led by Construction Manager Adam Humphreys and Project Manager Dylan Adams, to see how the facilities are starting to take shape, with the façade now complete.
Sir Ed and the councillors were extremely complimentary, citing the quality of the build and site management, our strong community engagement and the professionalism of the team throughout.
The two-storey, five-ward site is set to deliver transformative mental health care for people in South West London, and is part of a wider £280 million initiative by South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust.
Led by Project Director, Leigh Draper, the team has worked closely with the Trust to recognise its unique needs and requirements, ensuring that the designed building provides a functional environment encouraging safe care in therapeutic surroundings.
Every ward can access safe and monitored external spaces, either through courtyards, winter gardens or sky gardens, and bedrooms are external-facing so patients are always connected to the outside world.
Ava, who is part of the Trust’s Patient Carer Involvement Network, said representatives have “been so impressed at the development and the speed at which it’s being done, and the caring attitude of those who work on site.”
The project is being led and delivered by STEP (Springfield & Tolworth Estate Partnership), a joint venture between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures and Kajima Partnerships, and follows the successful delivery of facilities at Springfield Village for the same client.
The Tolworth redevelopment is part of a wider programme investing nearly £280m across South West London, modernising the Trust’s estate and improving environments for patients and staff.
The Trust will mobilise into the new hospital in the summer of 2027 while we complete the remaining site demobilisation and external work through to autumn 2027. The first service users will migrate to Tala in early 2028.
