Our track record speaks for itself at Commonwealth Games
The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Glasgow International Arena, which we built in 2012, will again host competition during this year's Commonwealth Games
As the latest Commonwealth Games gets under way in Glasgow, there's a familiar venue set to take centre stage once again.
The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which we originally built in 2012 ahead of the 2014 Games, is preparing to welcome some of the world's leading track cyclists for four days of competition between 30th July and 2nd August.
And the adjoining multi-purpose building which sits under the same roof, previously sponsored by Emirates but now known as Glasgow International Arena, will also host the competition's artistic gymnastics events in the days prior.
As lead contractor, we managed the creation of the entire complex, from arena, velodrome and community sports facilities, to the surrounding landscaping, car parks and access roads.
The quality of facilities within the 42,000m² complex were key in ensuring Glasgow could step up to hold this year's Games following the withdrawal of previous hosts Victoria in Australia.
The story behind the build is an impressive one. Constructed on a challenging brownfield site near the River Clyde, the project required extensive ground engineering before work could even begin in order to support the buildings.
The standout feature is undoubtedly the roof structure, where enormous 93-metre-span steel trusses, each weighing around 300 tonnes, were assembled from prefabricated sections and lifted into place using two 400-tonne cranes in a carefully planned operation.
The project also demonstrated some of the early benefits of BIM, which helped the team coordinate complex services and minimise clashes during construction, an innovative approach which earned our team a Best Use of IT in Construction award.
Following hot on the heels of the 2012 Olympic Stadium, it further proved our ability to deliver large scale stadia projects under challenging circumstances and to an immoveable deadline.
