London Olympic Stadium honoured in steel design awards
13 Jul 2012The Olympic Stadium has been honoured in this year’s Structural Steel Design Awards.
The Olympic Stadium has been completed under budget, ahead of schedule and with an exemplary safety record.
Constructed by the company in just under three years, the venue will be the centrepiece of the world’s largest sporting extravaganza, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics and field events.
The 80,000-seat stadium stands on a 40 acre site to the southern side of the Olympic Park in Stratford and was designed to be converted into a 25,000-seat venue at a later date.
The main accommodation for athletes, venue management, VIPs and media is provided in the west stand of the stadium.
To complete a complicated project such as this in less than three years is testament to the skill and professionalism of the UK construction industry. I would like to thank the Team Stadium consortium and all of the workers for their hard work and commitment. It is thanks to them that we can today celebrate this huge milestone for the London 2012 project and be proud of what can be achieved by UK plc.
