National Inclusion Week 2024
26 Sept 2024As we celebrate National Inclusion Week 2024, we share stories from women in construction, reflecting our commitment to creating an inclusive workplace.
Congratulations to Joanna Kuzelewska, Senior Design Manager at Sir Robert McAlpine who was crowned "Best Contractor" at the European Women in Construction & Engineering Awards.
This great achievement recognises Joanna's outstanding contribution to the industry, as well as her inspiring journey and dedication to driving change in construction, setting a new standard for aspiring women engineers and contractors.
Joanna joined us back in March 2008 and during that time has worked on landmark projects, including the Olympic Stadium, American Embassy and 135 Bishopsgate. She's currently based at our Westbury Hotel project in London.
Following her win, Joanna expressed her gratitude and her wish for the future: "I hope I’m leading the way for all our incredible women. We have so much talent within the organisation, and I’ll make sure we continue to celebrate it at these awards."
Joanna's commitment to empowering the next generation of potential engineers stands as a cornerstone of her vision. Having grown up in an engineering family, she acknowledges the fortunate circumstances that led her to consider a career in construction. Joanna firmly believes that every girl, regardless of her background, gender, or nationality, should have equal access to opportunities in the construction industry. With her newfound platform, she is determined to ensure that young girls are aware of the possibilities that await them in this dynamic industry.
During the judging process, Joanna had the privilege of spending time with the other finalists and hearing their stories. This experience proved to be immensely inspiring, reinforcing her commitment to making a difference in the industry. The diverse paths taken by all the finalists underscored the shared objective of driving change and breaking barriers.
As the "Best Woman Contractor in Europe", Joanna is resolved to make the most of this opportunity and create a lasting impact.
I urge others to join me in reaching out to the next generation, ensuring that the construction industry becomes more accessible, inclusive and representative of society at large
