
A19 Tees Viaduct project scoops Bridges award
31 Mar 2025The A19 project team wins the Ethos award for excellence in wellbeing, training, and community engagement.
Congratulations to Emma Shakespeare, Senior Design Manager who has won the Technical Excellence Award at the 2023 CN & NCE Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering.
The awards, which celebrated the role models and organisations empowering women in construction and engineering, were jointly hosted by New Civil Engineer and Construction News.
“The awards are living up to their mission of celebrating both individuals and businesses that are helping open up the construction and engineering industry as an inclusive place for women to contribute,” said NCE acting editor Belinda Smart.
“NCE congratulates all of our winners who will no doubt make standout role models for the industry and we look following their progress as they work with our mentors.”
In total, 15 winners were crowned, recognising the women and teams that stand out as exceptional and showcasing both individual and organisation wide initiatives.
The judges said:
“Emma was technically excellent, which is evident to the significant impact her design solutions have, fulfilling her vision of making a hospital a functioning place to work and a healing space for others."
It’s great to be industry recognised for all the upfront hard work that goes into developing complex designs of façades and other challenging design aspects of our mental healthcare hospitals. This includes ensuring that the expectations of all stakeholders are satisfied along with all the other compliances that we have to attain.

Emma is currently the Senior Design Manager on the Tolworth Hospital project which comprises of complex demolition and enabling works extensive landscaping and an 8000m2, five ward Acute Adult and Older Persons Mental Health Care Hospital within the existing Tolworth site.
This project forms part of the Springfield University Hospital development with Springfield and Tolworth Estate Partnership (STEP), a 50/50 partnership between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures Ltd and Kajima Partnerships.
