Introducing novel concrete mixes at London Museum

Working collaboratively with the client and supply chain partners, we successfully trialled a low carbon concrete mix which is believed to be a first for the UK

Early engagement and a strong collaborative spirit were pivotal in enabling the use of two new novel concrete mixes at London Museum.

The use of calcined clay concrete, believed to be the first such use of the material in the UK construction industry, could be key in the industry's efforts to use low-carbon concrete.

Calcined clay is a supplementary cementitious material that can replace carbon-intensive Portland cement.

The mix, comprised of calcined clay and recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) sourced from demolition waste, provides both circularity and carbon benefits.

In a further display of innovation, a second concrete mix using ECOCycle RCA substituted 20% of the recycled aggregate for crushed concrete waste sourced from demolition and construction activities.

A series of articles, published in the specialist construction press, have  delved into the technical details of those trials and how all stakeholders came together to deliver these potentially industry-changing innovations.

Key points include:

  • The benefits of early engagement in placing sustainability at the top of the agenda
  • Efficiently and quickly converting ideas into reality
  • Why a shift in planning and practical implementation of early engagement is critical to decarbonising the industry
