Kristina Jessup and Ellice Ord celebrate the role women continue to play in shaping the future of the industry on International Women's Day.

As a Senior Quantity Surveyor, I manage the commercial and contractual responsibilities that keep our projects running. This includes everything from early cost planning and procurement through to managing subcontract packages, final accounts, and key stakeholder relationships. My role gives a good overview of how projects come together, and I enjoy being involved through the full life of the construction project.
What I love about construction is the fact there is always a tangible end product that you know you have contributed to, and you can physically see the impact of your work on communities such as new theatres or a diagnostics centre in the healthcare sector. Most of all I also enjoy the collaborative nature of the industry, working with designers, engineers, site teams, and clients to solve problems and deliver something meaningful for the end user. Every project brings new challenges, and no project is the same, keeping things exciting and different.
Support has played a huge part in my development. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work with people who have encouraged, challenged, and helped me grow in confidence. That support made a real difference, especially early on when I was a relatively introverted character still finding my voice in a traditionally male dominated environment.
Equally, supporting others has become one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. I’ve mentored PlanBEE students, industrial training students, and graduates, and I’m also an RICS Mentor. Helping people navigate their first steps into the industry, and watching them grow, is incredibly fulfilling. The industry has changed massively over the past 10 years and its lovely to see a real mix of female and males starting to enter and grow within the industry.
Now I try to give back the support I would have valued myself, mentoring and advocating for all. When we invest in others everyone benefits.
Construction is full of opportunity, and there is a suitable role for everyone. Don’t let outdated perceptions put you off. The industry is evolving and has evolved massively over the last century with many more ladies entering the industry and thriving in both site and office based roles.
The industry benefits from the perspective of women being part of, influencing and leading project teams so if you’re considering a career in construction I’d say go for it, be open to trying out several roles to find the one that’s right for you.

As a commercial manager I am responsible for the commercial and contractual position of our IHP Bournemouth & Poole projects. Managing costs, contracts and risks to make sure both the business and Client are protected. A big part of my role is developing teams and people too. Watching someone gain confidence, take ownership and grow into bigger responsibilities is as rewarding as hitting the numbers.
What I enjoy most is the challenge, no two days are the same. Construction is fast paced and demanding but it’s also tangible. You can walk past a building and know you helped make it happen. I’ve learnt that being a human being, not just human doing, is key. Relationships, trust and integrity matter just as much as processes. Some days the administration feels endless but seeing a team succeed makes it worth it.
Support at work and at home has been huge. Early in my career I really leaned into learning from people who took the time to share their experience and explained the reasons why. I’ve also seen the challenges women still face, being interrupted in meetings, needing to assert yourself and making your voice heard. I’ve learnt to hold my ground, know my worth. One thing that helps is fear is often just excitement without breath. If you feel nervous it usually means you’re stepping into tomorrow’s growth.
Now I try to give back the support I would have valued myself, mentoring and advocating for all. When we invest in others everyone benefits.
Construction offers real opportunity. It’s challenging but rewarding with lots of space to learn, grow and make an impact. Lead authentically, bring your ideas and your style and don’t feel like you have to fit a mould. Finally, don’t shy away from discomfort, the moments that feel the toughest are where you grow the most. Step forward, speak up and celebrate every win, however small.
Leadership is about creating the conditions for people to do their best work and be themselves. Inclusion drives better decisions, stronger teams and outcomes that reflect our communities. With my daughter starting her career, International Women’s Day feels especially important as we continue championing equity so that potential is never limited by gender.
