150th anniversary special: New Civil Engineer, A Bridge to the Future

Never in our 150 year history has there been a better time to be a civil engineer at Sir Robert McAlpine. Strong and flourishing, we are actively boosting our civil engineering activity to further our breadth and resilience.

Our recognised history of civil engineering excellence formed a key part of our 150-year anniversary celebrations earlier this year. As we continue our ambition to become Britain’s Best Builder, our Civil Engineering Managing Director Tony Gates talks to New Civil Engineer about his team aspirations.

“As a company we have a strategic aim to be more resilient and we believe this will come from a more balanced mix of building and civil engineering”.

Our M6 Junction 19 Joint Venture project at Knutsford for Highways England, is one example of our growing civil engineering portfolio.

A strategic focus on increasing our civil engineering capabilities, alongside modernisation and development, form a core part of our strategy for the future. This is driven by technical and engineering excellence in our goal to become Britain’s Best Builder.

Alison Cox, Engineering and Technical Services Director added:

“We must prepare for changes to traditional construction models. Embracing construction technology like BIM, and a strong focus on incorporating digital technology, remain key to our civil engineering evolution.”

This goes hand in hand with creating a workplace culture that supports people and their development at an individual level, reinforcing our family culture.

We are driven to create opportunities across the business for engagement and progression in an inclusive environment. Being the best place to work and leading the construction industry with our history of engineering excellence, is paramount in ensuring our continuing progression in a fast-changing future.
