Celebrating International Women’s Day with Victoria Inglis

A passionate advocate for a more climate-conscious future, Sustainability Apprentice, Victoria Inglis, is proud to be helping make a positive difference on two landmark London projects.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Victoria Inglis, Sustainability Apprentice at Sir Robert McAlpine, shares her experience of working on site, getting involved in initiatives that support women in the construction industry.

Victoria’s passion for sustainability began at an early age. Now two years into a five-year Sustainability Manager apprenticeship, she is balancing hands-on experience with studying Environmental Science at Kingston University.

Her journey into the construction industry was inspired by her participation in the Broadgate Future Talent programme—a collaboration between the Construction Youth Trust (CYT), British Land, and Sir Robert McAlpine. Motivated by a desire to build a rewarding career while actively contributing to the fight against the climate crisis, she saw construction as the perfect platform to make a meaningful impact.

“I’ve always been interested in the environment and the natural world. During school, I worked on extracurriculars such as a net zero research project with Imperial College London, but it was through the CYT programme that I realised how many different roles exist in construction—it’s not just about physical work,” Victoria says.

Her role sits over two projects we are delivering for British Land on the Broadgate campus in the heart of London: 2 Finsbury Avenue and 1 Broadgate.  It involves tracking the environmental KPIs, data management, regularly attending site and more to ensure sustainability protocols are being followed.

“Being on a project where they've got such ambitious targets really shows how high level the job is. It’s not just about planting a few trees or adding planters around a building—there’s so much more to it,” she explains.

“It's really good to immerse myself in such large-scale projects and gain on-site experience. There are challenges but it's great to have the client so bought in and pushing us to meet the project's sustainability targets.”

Victoria is also actively involved in initiatives that support women in the construction industry. She participates in a women's network group within her projects, where she contributes to discussions on improving workplace culture and empowering women in the industry.

In April 2025, she will represent the United Kingdom at the Miss Eco International pageant, using this global platform to advocate for sustainability and share her vision for a greener future. The event aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, with a strong focus on eco-tourism and environmental awareness.

“This pageant is truly something with purpose and drive, and it provides you with an international platform to speak about what you're passionate about,” Victoria says. “For me, that means advocating for sustainability across Britain.”

“It’s a chance to speak up for the youth, represent their views and show we can make a change.”

You can support Victoria on her journey by engaging with her eco video and helping to spread her message. Those interested in further supporting her advocacy efforts can explore sponsorship opportunities or contribute in other meaningful ways.
