Celebrating International Men’s Day with Mark Gibson

Today is International Men’s Day, an opportunity to look at men who are leading by example and bringing positive values to the world and communities. As our Managing Director for the North, Mark Gibson’s career journey from starting out as a Trainee Engineer, makes him an ideal role model.

This year’s theme for International Men’s Day is: “Better relations between men and women”.

Here we catch up with Mark Gibson, Managing Director for our northern business who joined Sir Robert McAlpine some 30 years ago as a Trainee Engineer.

In the video below, Mark shares more about how he got to where he is today. From Trainee Engineer he has developed his career with Sir Robert McAlpine working in various roles, including Engineer, Section Engineer, Chief Engineer, Project Manager, through to Managing Director.

His career highlights include his work on the Grand Cascade at Alnwick Gardens in 2000 where he was awarded ‘Engineer of the Year’.

Considering this year's theme, Mark shares his thoughts on how he believes the industry could go about rebalancing genders in construction:

Never overlook female talent. We need to make the industry more attractive to females, including the variety of roles that are available. It most certainly isn’t just for men, so it’s about changing those perceptions. Developing the strategy to change is important and, at SRM, we are making good strides on that journey including addressing the gender pay gap.
