How to build a better future for NHS Infrastructure

In-house experts, Stuart McArthur and Robert Wotherspoon, share their insights on the New Hospital Programme and the rest of the NHS estate

Our in-house experts delve into the benefits of the New Hospital Programme, as well as future challenges and opportunities

In an article entitled “NHP is a good start but what about the rest of the NHS Estate”, published recently in Building Better Healthcare, Stuart McArthur, Health Sector Director at Sir Robert McAlpine, and Robert Wotherspoon, CEO of Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures, delve into the benefits of the New Hospital Programme (NHP) as well as the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Trusts not included in the first wave of the NHP.

“The New Hospital Programme is a huge opportunity for change, representing a turning point for the construction and healthcare industries by bringing clarity as well as an opportunity for the industry to truly collaborate, both across the programme and up and down the supply chain,” they write.

From the urgent need for Net Zero Carbon compliance to the potential role of private finance in bridging funding gaps, this piece offers a comprehensive look at the future of NHS infrastructure.

Stuart and Robert also argue that “the suite of standardised, pre-approved functional configurations, backed up by underpinning clinical and operational policies and delivered through approved, manufactured components and assemblies – which is precisely what NHP is aiming to deliver – would offer an attractive starting point for a future Privately Financed programme.

"Both investors and contractors would welcome a Public Sector Comparator / Reference Design which offered large elements of pre-approved and quality tested solutions, reduced the need for extensive user-consultations (and its associated time and cost), whilst de-risking capacity and quality issues in the supply chain. “

Key highlights:

  • The NHP's transformational commercial model and its impact on the construction market.
  • The critical state of many NHS Trusts' physical environments and the pressing need for investment.
  • The potential for private sector involvement to ensure long-term sustainability.
