Bloomberg London wins RIBA Stirling Prize

October 11, 2018

Bloomberg London has been named the best new building in the UK, winning the 2018 RIBA Stirling Prize.

The judges were unanimous in their decision, describing Bloomberg’s new European headquarters as "a once-in-a-generation project which has pushed the boundaries of research and innovation in architecture".

RIBA President, Ben Derbyshire said the building, designed by Foster + Partners, was a “monumental achievement” … “that has “not just raised the bar for office design and city planning, but smashed the ceiling.”

Prior to the announcement at the Roundhouse in London on 10th October, the building was also named winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize People’s Vote.

These latest accolades add to the numerous awards Bloomberg has picked up recently.

The development was named Best Project to Work on (Building) at the Construction Enquirer Awards, after more than 18,000 votes were cast by Enquirer readers for their favourite companies and projects.

It was also recently honoured with a Structural Steel Design Award, the judges saying: “The elegant exterior of this major building, a polite addition to the City, conceals a fabulous interior supported by a highly innovative design in steel.

“The unique triangular column grid and roof transfer system create the large open spaces required by the client, whilst the vortex transfer structure and atrium ramp produce effective yet stimulating circulation routes.

“The attention to detail throughout the project sets the highest standard for commercial office accommodation.”

Bloomberg London was one of a number of award-winning entries, from a shortlist of 22, all of which scored highly in terms of efficiency, cost-effectiveness, aesthetics, sustainability and innovation.

On 1st October, the project was named Best of the Best and picked up the Corporate Workplace award at the British Council for Offices (BCO) Awards.

The BCO awards programme sets out to recognise top quality office design and functionality, with the objective of setting the standard for excellence across the office sector in the UK.

The BCO judging panel described Bloomberg’s new European headquarters as one of the most significant office developments in recent times and an ‘exceptional’ workplace for its occupants.

The BCO said: “The research and development of innovative solutions and the determination to deliver them have dispelled some myths about the nature of the workplace in congested urban areas and reset the benchmark of what is considered possible. Bloomberg’s new building combines unparalleled innovation, exceeds BCO guidance and raises the bar for corporate headquarter buildings.”

Sir Robert McAlpine was the main contractor on the project, which was completed in 2017.
