
Max Hacon - Graduate Engineer
After graduating in Civil Engineering at Bristol University, Max joined us in January 2018. We caught up with him to find out more about the start of his career with us.
Harry graduated from the University of Manchester in 2017, with a degree in Civil Engineering. After working initially for Carillion, he joined us as Graduate Engineer in 2018. We caught up with Harry to find out about his experiences with us.
What were your first impressions of the company?
The list of incredible projects they have delivered really impressed me. I was given responsibility from day one, and have always felt as though I am important to the company.
Could you give a brief description of your current role?
I’m part of a team responsible for the internal works of the student accommodation we are building.
What are you most enjoying about the job?
Seeing the project progress from where it was when I started in February, to where it is now. Knowing I’ve contributed gives me a great sense of pride. The thought of completing the project motivates me to continue working hard.
What’s stood out about your experience so far?
You feel like you are being invested in. The amount of support and training I have received so far has been incredible, and you feel as though you are being pushed to fulfil your potential.
What are your future career ambitions - how are you working towards them?
I’ve just started my journey towards Chartership with the Institute of Civil Engineers. I want to progress to become a Project Manager in the future. I’m learning new things each day, which makes me believe that this is a realistic goal.
Which qualities do you think it takes to succeed?
A strong work ethic, an eagerness to learn and a desire to fulfil your potential. If you impress with the responsibilities you’re given, you won’t go unnoticed. Career progression is based on merit.
What is your favourite Sir Robert McAlpine project?
I grew up near Birmingham, and was always impressed by the Bullring. It wasn’t until I joined Sir Robert McAlpine that I found out that we built it! Knowing we’ve delivered such iconic buildings excites me to work on similarly forward-thinking projects in the future.
How would you sum up Sir Robert McAlpine in three words?
Family. Investment. Quality.

Robert studied Computer Games Modelling and Animation at the University of Derby, and then joined a major contractor in their Building Information Modelling function. We spoke to Robert about working in BIM at Sir Robert McAlpine.
