might also have a line on a local rental chute..
   john murray productions. and now...

joining our team, the FIRST person to jump in
who is not on the internet at all, is teresa
hempel. t was one of my accomplices at ldi,
and she has worked to put on some of the biggest
parties sf has ever seen. peet, remember that
big queer academy awards party at the fashion
center? anyone heard of the black and white
ball? that's t. she was the event manager/planner
at the fashion centre/john murray for a few years.
*including* our appearance at toon town.

she's fully psyched on the project. jd and peet
will be meeting me and her for lunch, i don't
know how to get ahold of julia at this time...
t has access to a massive wealth of local materials
and scenery, including a gaint roll of carpet
foam. she said that it would be good as ground
cover. she also said that it makes cool costume
material, and she'd be happy sitting around all
day with a matte knife and white gaffers tape
making costumes for anyone and everyone. a woman
close to jd's heart. anyway, she has lots of other
   materials to bring...

i have heard from a rigger (that we might recruit)
that those screw stakes are a bitch to use. going to
persue renting proper stakes and a manual stake
pounding device from top productions. also, from the
rigger, i got some ideas for anchoring the chute down
as well. also, i got an impression of maybe it would
be better to lash to the rv's... and a good knot.
truckers hitch, wrap the mother all the way around
   the rv.

flying over the desert in a heilium baloon? ummmmm
ok man, go for it. personally, i;d rather parasail.
i am gonna look into a rig for that today.

bicycles... everyone find a bicycle. we'll find a
   way to haul them...

Howdy! I'm representing the susie contingent -- I think there should
be seven of us crowded into a winnebego doin' the ambient thing as she
mentioned in one of the previous notes. How this will materialize is
beyond me. Stay tuned.

Couple of notes: No argon laser, but we will have a HeNe in the
winnebego (being a science grad student does have its advantages ;-) If
you're really good, I'll bring a diffraction grating :-P.

So, I've been killing some time lately reading _The straight dope_,
a compillation of the weekly newspaper column, and I came across one of those
strange but true stories: A guy actually tethered four weather ballons to
an aluminum lawn chair and sailed 15,000 up (no shit). Aparently, two
planes witnessed this. He let himself down by shooting holes in the
balloons with a pellet gun. Unharmed, the pilot was served a $1500 fine
for operating an unregistered flying vehicle. It can be done...

take care,

steve

Oh yeah, that reminds me that I have a ~1 mW HeNe somewhere...
should I bring it along? It's old and finicky, but it
usually comes on when power is applied.

wow... i also have a laser. kind of small, needs a little
work (i lost the power supply to the control unit, and there's
not any markings on the unit saying what kind of power it
   needs):

i have a few difraction-grating pairs of glasses.

be careful bringing up that straight dope stuff....
peet and jd will strap julia in and send her off...

I'd love to get to that Video Fest
but I guess I'm the first to go on
at Joe's party. One and all should
show up. Be pre-drunk to hear me play
and post-drunk to hear Rocky spin!

T is a cool kat. WBLPowerLunch 1.0 went
well. More supplies have been secured!
Though next time we have lunch let's do
   without the 'forearm' size burritos.

Sorry folks. I guess I was joking about
   the WBLMobileWeatherBalloon unit. The balloons
we have wouldn't really hold up to that kind
of thing... plus we'd have to detach one of
the RV Fleet to act as a chase car. So all
you flyboyz and gurlz will have to put your
wings away for another day... but if Ford
showed up maybe we could all go up.

Bikes: we could all get those small collapsable
bikes. Aren't those readily available via
   the garage sale circuit?

Hey, those of use who are planning to bring passenger cars could
give chase....

And $20 Phat Beach Cruisers are probably a better idea than those
fold-up bikes, which probably won't do well at all off-road.

   wbl: http://www.organic.com/Staff/caliban/WBL
        http://www.srm.com/wbl

wbl is a group of people who make weird things happen.
created in santa cruz, we quickly dispersed throughout
the bay area and south america. there is music, film,
software, hardware, performance, personality, dance and
anything else that will draw attention to ourselves.

wbl is sort of about inclusion of everyone's creative
process and collaborating of said processes into one
or more final visions, never the same twice because
different combinations of people show up each time.
yeah yeah, very santa cruz. it's also about showing
up uninvited and saying "we're here! where do we
set up?!" easy to get gigs that way.

on the web you can also reference/search 'geek house'
and find more of us. basically, we put out the call,
and have about 20 people interested (more or less)
   in actually making the trip.

we hooked up with the partyOn rv, susie6, brian b,
laura lagassa, ben wing and a few others, to further
the numbers and co-conspititors and camp-mates.
i approached julie with rv questions, as well as to
try and expand the camp, bring in more minds to the
gestalt. everyone will get a chance to dj or whatever
they want to do. costumes, henna tattoos... whatever
idea or brainstorm you have just yak about it on
bman@bud.com. we welcome everyone to the camp.

oh, the camp. so far, three rv's with either a giant
heliotent in the middle or over them all. we have to
do more recon work to figure out this part of it.
well have live music, and dj gear. we'll be locating
about halfway between the wicked system and the spaz
system, so we'll have a number of people stopping by
for the atmosphere. a few other vehicles will be there,
cars, bikes. maybe a geodesic dome, and definately
   a number of tents.

there will be a communal evening meal daily, and probably
the traditional sfraves pancake breakfasts in the morning.

what we're planning on is collecting $250-$300 per person
in advance. this pays for the rv's, the fuel (for getting
up to bman and for running the generators), bman admission,
food, some sundries. net access will be via 300 baud
packet radio, unless someone comes up with a better solution.

the rv's will provide 100 (cross fingers) gallons of water
each, electricity, kitchen (on propane), bathrooms, and
sleeping quarters for a few. if more people want to sleep
in them than there is space for (the two wbl rv's that is)
we'll switch daily, draw names, everyone gets a turn, etc.
everyone is friendly and reasonable so it'll work out.

let this rant serve as an invitation to join the ranks
(we'd love to "need" to get a 4th rv!) or join the camp
with your own idea of desert luxury.

So if you want the whole balloon story --

How fleeting is fame. It's been a mere six years since Larry Walters
made his legendary flight, and already people think he's a mythical being. Au
contraire. Larry, an authentic working class hero (at the time he was
driving a truck), went aloft July 2, 1982, from his girlfriend's backyard in
suburban Los Angeles. His craft: an aluminum lawn chair borne by forty two
helium filled weather balloons.
Larry's original idea was that he would fly east to the Mojave
Desert, but it didn't quite work out that way. As his girlfriend and his
buddy were feeding out the tether, the line broke and he shot skyward.
Eventually, he reached sixteen thousand ffet, where pilots of at least two
airplanes saw him. Not wanting to cause a fuss, he began putting out calls on
his portable CB radio. After a while his feet got cold, so he pullend out a
pellet pistol and began shooting out the balloons.
The descent was uneventful except for the fact that the ballons w
wrapped around some power lines, knocking out the electricity in a Long Beach
residential neighborhood for about twenty minutes. But Larry and his chair
-- stayed clear: he simply dropped a few feet to the ground, having spent
ninety minutes in the air.
Most people thought the whole thing was pretty funny, and Larry got to
appear on Letterman and the _Today_ show. But the FAA was not amused. "We
know he broke some part of the Federal Aviation Act, and as soon as we
decide which part it is, some type of charge will be filed," a spokesman said.
Sure enough, Walters was charged with reckless operation of an aircraft
failure to stay in communication with the tower, and flying a "civil
aircraft for which there is not currently in effect an airworthiness
certificate." He wound up paying a $1500 fine. If you ask me, it was
worth every penny.

In addition to the WBL RV icon, I think we all need our own
icons for the weekend, either incorporated into costumes or just
attached to normal clothing.

In fact, iconic imagery should pervade. WBLRVI II III and IV all need
some variations of the same thing on the side.

Hi Folks,

JD and I had a successful day of hunting. We
visited a few surplus houses over in E.Bay and
found some neat things. One, we saw the 35ft
parachute that I mentioned about a week ago.
It turns out that it will be too heavy as it
is a drag vented parachute... basically it has
a vented surface with what feels like cords
running through it to the apex. The cords made
it too heavy. They still have an 80ft (for $289!)
over at their warehouse... rocky, let me know as
soon as possible if we can get that 60ft'r. It
should be a perfecsize. We also found some
great cheap ground spikes with handy clasps already
installed. All we'd need to do it pop some
gromets on that 'chute and clip it to the ground.

groundcover: can we rely on the black plastic as
a last resort? (no pun intended) It might work but
it feels slimy to the touch and might get really
hot in the desert environment. besides, we'd have to
tack it down as well... something like astroturf
could be held by its own weight.

bikes: pedal revolution on vanness has beach cruisers
for $50 or so. I'll probably check it out tomorrow.

any word on those geodesic domes?

Geodesic domes!

I've been communicating with Bart Cheever, aka Mr. Geodesic. He is going to set up a 32' geodesic dome with strobing weather balloon and parachute at Narnia that same weekend as Bman (great minds think alike i guess). If he DOESN'T go to Narnia (which he's still not sure of) he is interested in joining our setup. I think it goes without saying that this bright lad will undoubtedly make an important contribution to our group, and most of you know him better than I do. So by all means, encourage him to skip out on Narnia and join Our Side.MWAHAHAHAHAA!

yes. i need to get on the budget numbers as well as
make some calls this week. katie and i talked meal
planning this weekend, and i want to get some numbers
from here as well. there is going to be alot of
        food to cook.

we talked about a few things, too...

        solely vegetarian meals?
*everyone* must bring their own personal plate, bowl,
        cup, fork, knife and spoon?
breakfast foods prepared, or just made available? or none?

we'd like input on those items.

re: black plastic: four days of spilled drinks, sweat,
muddy naked painted bman goers, dew, etc etc will make
        the black plastic pretty gross.

lessee... icons. sounds like a great idea dave.
maybe everyone should think about their own personal
icons. oh, and i liked that xbitmap i did for my
soda face. i'd like to maybe see that format
   for icons....

i spoke to john murray at john murray productions about
the parachute theresa told us about. john said that he
thinks it's not sixty feet (more like forty) but theresa
thinks it's bigger. john said we should come by to check
   it out this week.

he also said that he diddn't know how much to charge, so
we should just tell him how much we can spare :)

tried to call about the turf and the stakes but they were
   not in...

On the question of ice...

J. Caleb Donaldson has the best idea in these matters. When he and Tricia
go to Reggae on the River, they take a little dry ice along in the cooler
(wrapped for safety). Three days into the fest, they pull out a buncha
popsicles and everyone drools. I'm sure we can buy some dry ice
somewhere...
