The wind was mild last year though, so if the tent you envision is very large, I'd play it safe and get larger tent stakes. One thing I learned last year is you can't have too many tent stakes! Same goes for sunscreen, lotion and water. The playa is nice and dense - just fine for mountain biking. I suggest that everyone bring a bicycle; you'll want to ride around to the various camps, visit hot springs, etc. > hellpful. also, exactly how far from the bman site is > the nearest gas station? I think that would be in the town of Gerlach, about 10 miles away. We are also working 'round the clock with several chemical companies running full steam to figure out the safe range in which to keep a large metal tank of compressed helium. We'd like to keep the air conditioning off in the Bounder (if we start talking like it's ours maybe it will be) whenever possible. Window shades drawn closed at all times may help to keep temperatures down inside, and concking out aslpeep during the time around high noon will render us able to run around when it's not so hot. If we're sleeping under the Bounder, will we be needing to watch out for any critters, or is does this desert really out the "des" in "desolate"? =uv From julie@hotwired.com Tue Jul 18 17:39:29 1995 Received: from ramona.cyborganic.com by echo.com (8.6.9/1.34) id KAA07133; Tue, 18 Jul 1995 10:39:19 -0700 Received: from get.wired.com (get.wired.com [204.62.131.5]) by ramona.cyborganic.com (8.6.10/8.6.9) with ESMTP id KAA21700 for ; Tue, 18 Jul 1995 10:38:17 -0700 Received: from [204.62.132.59] by get.wired.com (8.6.12/sven) with SMTP id KAA09834; Tue, 18 Jul 1995 10:33:36 -0700 Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" X-URL: http://www.hotwired.com/ Date: Tue, 18 Jul 1995 10:45:02 -0800 To: bman@bud.com From: julie@wired.com (Julie Petersen) Subject: The Weather Status: R I went last year...the weather was very pleasant. There was a time there, in the middle of the afternoon (2-4 is the hotzone), when you might get a sweat going. I don't recall the actual temperature but it wasn't superhot and there were breezes. It's a dry heat - and you can take all your clothes off and nobody cares. We were lucky last year because it didn't rain - I hear they had a mighty thunderstorm the year before. You have to be prepared for thunder and wind. There's nothing to break the wind for miles and miles around. We went in a large van and slept inside and in tents (remember, it gets cold at night in the desert). As far as RV cooling goes, my husband and I recently took our RV to Vegas. The temps were up in the mid 90s. We have no air conditioning. We opened all the windows and closed all the shades. We put scarves over the roof vents and door windows. A sun ray can up the inside temp a few hundred degrees it seems. It managed to stay liveable - but we felt like trogladytes in a cave. All in all, I recall the Black Rock Desert being incredibly pleasant last year, but it's a chaotic place... Hlo Anika, The weather last year: it was dry, not _too_ hot (maybe it got up to 100 F, but nice dry heat). The wind picked up a bit at sunrise and sunset, but nothing too serious. However, in past years there have actually been rain storms, dust storms, and probably more intense wind. Oh yeah, a rain jacket might come in handy, counterintuitive thought that seems. > If we're sleeping under the Bounder, will we be needing to watch out for any > critters, or is does this desert really out the "des" in "desolate"? The only creatures I saw were a few earwigs that probably came along for the ride. But! Tomorrow WBL will attempt to coerce a military base in Georgia to give WBL large parachutes at almost no cost to the WBL consumer. JD and I also discussed helio-dynamic physics with some people at work. Things could work out quite nicely. We might need 2 tanks of helium to pull the whole thing off effectively. Plus we might be able to use the actual balloons to levitate a WBL representative high above the desert floor! More news to come. Bikes! Is there still a guy in SC who sells phat beach cruisers for $20? Perhaps we could get a group rate. I always liked his paint jobs. Though 3 to a vehical might hinder our mass mobility. How do people feel about planning a Burning Man Critical Mass ride? Simple foods sound fine. But mass supplies of garlic bread sound better! If KT can get a semi accurate shopping list together I'd be glad to shop up here at COSTCO and RAINBO(w) here in SF. Peet
